When our military men and women serve overseas, they take a number of steps to make sure their affairs stateside are taken care of. One of these steps is to assign what is known as a "representative payee." Soldiers will give their parents or their significant other permission to manage their affairs. It is a lot easier to have a girlfriend pay the rent than the try to negotiate a wire transfer from the mountains of Afghanistan.

When these soldiers become veterans, they sometimes also choose to let a family member or friend help manage their financial affairs. Sometimes a veteran returns home with physical wounds that make it difficult to deposit checks at the bank or pick up prescriptions. Other times, they just want help making sure the cable bill gets paid on time.

For the past decade, veterans who assigned representative payees found themselves in the crosshairs of a massive disarmament program.

There is a provision in the law that allows for an American to lose his or her 2nd Amendment rights if they are adjudicated mentally defective. In most cases, this adjudication happens in a courtroom. But there is also a provision in the law that allows for disarmament if someone is unable to manage their own affairs. The VA has been using the assignment of a representative payee as an excuse to disarm veterans.

Not every mental illness rises to the level of disarmament. A veteran grieving over the loss of a loved one or suffering from mild anxiety cannot legally be disarmed. But if he or she signed paperwork to appoint a representative payee, then the VA argues that their mental illness makes them unable to manage their affairs.

It's a gross miscarriage of justice that has led to hundreds of thousands of veterans losing their constitutional right to defend themselves.

On March 16, the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly to pass the Veterans 2nd Amendment Protection Act. This bill would force the VA to go to court if they believe a veteran is a danger to themself or others. VA bureaucrats would no longer be allowed to disarm American heroes without any due process.

However, the bill has stalled in the Senate. For almost two months, it has collected dust waiting for a committee hearing. Meanwhile, veterans continue to lose their 2nd Amendment rights for absolutely no reason.

I am writing to demand that you do everything in your power to put this legislation on President Trump's desk. You already passed legislation to prohibit an identical program at the Social Security Administration. It is time to put an end to this disarmament scheme at the Department of Veterans Affairs!
