Yesterday, the President of the United States gave a speech at the NRA's convention and declared that the 2nd Amendment's “right of self-defense is essential to public safety."

For the first time, a modern President is making the case for concealed carry reciprocity.

Right now, there are ten states that make it extremely difficult or impossible for their residents to bear arms. Even though the 2nd Amendment says that bearing arms is a right, and the Supreme Court interpretted that to mean a right to carry guns, states like New York, California, and New Jersey get away with prohibiting concealed carry.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act would make concealed carry permits valid nationwide. Similar to driver's licenses, gun owners should not be forced to jump through hoops when traveling across the country.

In practically the entire country, it is legal for a motorist to make a right turn at a red light. However, in New York City, making a right-on-red is prohibitted. Does NYC force visitors to take a driver's test before they're allowed to drive down Broadway? Of course not. Anyone with a valid driver's license is allowed to drive in New York City, but it is up to them to know the local traffic laws.

Concealed carry reciprocity works the same way. When the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act passes, someone licensed to carry a concealed weapon in Florida would be allowed to also carry their firearm in South Carolina. But it will be up to the gun owner to know South Carolina's self-defense laws.

In Heller v DC, the Supreme Court ruled that the 2nd Amendment protects an individual right to bear arms. In McDonald v Chicago, the Court ruled that the 2nd Amendment applies just as much to state and local governments as it does to the Feds.

So why do you allow a minority of states to flat out violate their residents' constitutional rights like this?

The President is fully behind the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. The legislation now has 190 sponsors and co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. And yet, the bill is stuck in committee.

There are no more excuses.

I am writing to demand that you move this legislation through committee and on to a floor vote.

A right delayed is a right denied. With every day that passes, I have no choice but to assume that your inaction is deliberate and I will be voting accordingly...
