The VA is going after more than 187,000 disabled veterans who were accidentally paid too much in disability benefits. One veteran who was shot in the head in Iraq is being forced to pay back more than $11k. Until he does, his disability benefits will be cut off.

This is so shameful.

I am all for balancing the budget, but not on the backs of veterans.

This debt collection needs to end. It is unconscionable.

Last year, I wrote to you about how the Pentagon was trying to claw back millions of dollars in signing bonuses that were incorrectly given to people who agreed to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Thankfully, a bipartisan majority of Congressmen and Senators heard our plea and intervened to shut down the Pentagon's debt collection program.

I am writing to you today to notify you that the VA is doing the same thing.

For years, the Department of Veterans Affairs has been accidentally overpaying disabled veterans. After an audit, the VA is now forcing these disabled vets to repay these debts. Last year, almost 187,000 veterans were notified they owed the VA money for past overpayment of benefits.

One former Army combat medic and Iraq veteran who lives in Idaho was told he owed $9,831.93 to the VA. Colorado veteran who was shot in the head in Iraq received an overpayment notice for $11,119.41.

Until these men repay these debts, their disability benefits will be shut off.

This is shameful and you must put an end to it. These men and women put everything on the line to defend this country. They gave their blood, sweat, tears, and in some cases, even limbs in defense of our nation. These are veterans who are 50% to 100% disabled. And now the Federal government is trying to claw back thousands of dollars?

No.

You cannot allow a government error to force these brave men and women into bankruptcy. You MUST put an end to the VA's debt collection program!
