A 70-year-old Vietnam veteran just shot and killed a man who tried to rob him at gun point. Because he is a Missouri resident and the robbery happened in Illinois, this vet came dangerously close to committing a felony himself because of Illinois' gun laws.

The votes are there in Congress to pass the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. As of this morning, the bill now has 150 co-sponsors. More importantly, we now have a President who has promised to sign it.

This week, a 70-year-old Vietnam veteran was robbed at gunpoint in Illinois. Luckily, he had a concealed handgun and was able to return fire, killing one of his attackers and inuring another.

Because this veteran is a Missouri resident, and the robbery took place in Illinois, he came dangerously close to committing a felony himself. Even though he is licensed to carry a firearm in his home state, Illinois refuses to recognize his 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.

The State Attorney has chosen not to press charges against him. But this illustrates how our country's patchwork system of reciprocity laws are putting law-abiding Americans in danger.

Just like the 1st Amendment protects an American's right to pray in all 50 states, the 2nd Amendment right to bear arms applies nationwide as well.

This individual right to self defense does not end at the state line. It exists nationwide.

The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 would put an end to this madness once and for all. Under the legislation, if an American is licensed or permitted to carry a concealed weapon in any state, they would be permitted to carry in every state.

The bill would also allow law-abiding citizens who live in gun control states like New Jersey and California to have their 2nd Amendment rights restored to them.

This bill is common sense. As of this morning, it has 150 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives. It is time to move forward with it. It is time to vote.

I am writing to ask that you use your political capital to help push this legislation through committee and onto the floor for a full vote. Please, empower Americans to defend themselves and their communities!
