Urgent: Congress Voting to Stop Pentagon Attacks on Veterans!

Last month, we told you about how the Pentagon was pushing veterans to the brink of bankruptcy in an attempt to claw back decades-old signing bonuses that they received.

Many of these veterans sacrificed life and limb to fulfill their service contracts. Now, the US Government wants its money back? No way.

Next week, Congress will vote on a Defense Appropriations Bill. As it stands now, the legislation would only prevent future attempts to collect these "debts." The Democrats have introduced an amendment that would go even further by refunding, with interest, all money that veterans have already paid and devoting resources to help these devastated veterans repair their credit histories.

The Democrats have submitted a no-strings-attached bill that will fix all of these problems. The veterans who are suffering don't care whether a bill's sponsor has an R or D next to their name. They just need our help. This legislation deserves our support!

Last month, we learned that National Guard veterans were being harassed and forced to repay signing bonuses that they were given over a decade ago when they re-enlisted. The Pentagon figured out that they received too much money in exchange for re-enlisting, so a debt collections program was initiated.

More than 1,700 veterans were forced to pay back these "debts." Many had to take out a second mortgage on their homes. Others had to empty their entire life savings. Some were forced to the brink of bankruptcy. All because some accountant at the Pentagon determined they made too much money more than a decade ago.

Next week, before the Thanksgiving Recess, you and your colleagues will vote on a Defense Department appropriations bill. Right now, as it stands, this legislation would put an end to all future attempts to collect these "debts." But this bill doesn't go far enough.

As I said, more than 1,700 veterans have already been forced to pay back their signing bonuses. We're not talking a few dollars... these signing bonuses were as much as $15,000.

The Democrats have introduced the National Guard Bonus Repayment and Financial Relief Act to fill this gap.

This legislation would (1) refund the money to all soldiers who have already paid, with interest, (2) direct all credit agencies to wipe any history of the debt from these soldiers’ records, and (3) provide additional resources to help those veterans who have had their lives ruined by this collections program.

Protecting our veterans isn't a partisan issue. It is something that all Americans can get behind.

It is incredibly important that you prevent the DoD from ever trying to restart this debt collection program. But it is even more important that you help fix the damage this program has caused.

Our veterans don't care whether this legislation has an R or a D next to the sponsor's name. They don't have time to worry about that...

I strongly urge you to study the Democrats' proposal - the National Guard Bonus Repayment and Financial Relief Act - and add it to next year's Defense bill.
