Shameful: Pentagon Forcing Thousands of Veterans Into Bankruptcy

Veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq are getting collections notices from the Pentagon. The Obama administration doesn’t like how much these soldiers were given in signing bonuses for re-enlisting at the height of the war.

These men and women decided to re-enlist, at least in part, because of the signing bonuses. Now, a decade later, the Pentagon says they were paid too much.

Veterans are losing their homes and going into bankruptcy over this. Unacceptable.

Both Republicans and Democrats agree: this needs to be stopped immediately. But it is up to YOU to force them to act!

Ten years ago, at the height of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the military was hemorrhaging soldiers. All branches were facing a crisis of soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen choosing not to re-enlist.

So, the Pentagon began offering signing-bonuses for anyone who chose to re-enlist. The more specialized the soldier, the higher the bonuses.

In California, men and women were offered as much as $25k to re-enlist.

Robert Richmond decided to re-enlist when he was notified that he qualified for a $15,000 bonus because he was in Special Forces.

He ended up suffering permanent back and brain injury when a roadside bomb exploded next to his vehicle.

“I signed a contract that I literally risked my life to fulfill,” Richmond says. So you can understand why he is furious about being forced to pay back his bonus.

All in all, 14,000 soldiers ended up receiving “improper bonuses.” Some of them were injured and are currently disabled. A smaller number of these men ended up paying the ultimate sacrifice. The government wants them all to repay their bonuses.

Can you imagine? A widow receiving a collections notice because her deceased husband was paid too much to go off to war…

Veterans are being forced to refinance their homes to repay these “debts.” Those who don’t have sufficient equity are being forced to the brink of bankruptcy.

This is unacceptable.

These men and women lived up to their side of the contract. They served the military during a time of war. They can’t get their years back and they can’t get their friends back. It is insulting for the government to ask for its money back.

I am demanding immediate Congressional action. There is bipartisan support for this, so there is no excuse for inaction.

No more excuses. Put an end to this claw-back program and protect our Vets right now!
