Another Police Officer Killed. Why Won't Congress Protect Them?

It is open season on police officers in this country and all the Obama administration can seem to muster is praise for the organizations calling for more violence.

Police officers are being deliberately targeted. Many times, officers are being shot at because they of their skin color. And yet, the Obama Justice Department refuses to classify any of these killings as hate crimes.

This is unacceptable.

There is now a serious push in Congress behind the Thin Blue Line movement to reclassify Police Officers as a protected class within the Federal hate crime statutes. the Blue Lives Matter Act would reclassify any targeted attack against police as a hate crime.

Right now, it is open season on American law enforcement.

Police Officers are being called to "crime scenes" and then gunned down by people lying in wait. Just yesterday, a police officer in Georgia was shot and killed exiting his squad car to respond to a call.

But under the current federal statute, there is no additional mandatory penalty for killing a police officer.

The Department of Justice has interpreted the law in a way that means even if a police officer is assassinated because of his race, he does not qualify as a protected class under the hate crime statutes.

The result is that we have police officers who discharge their weapons in the line of duty and immediately become suspects of hate crime investigations while the officers who themselves were targeted are treated just like any other victim.

Some states have passed laws to protect police officers against those who would target them, but the patchwork system of laws we have in this country is unaccetable.

State attorneys should not have to fight with the Feds for control of a case in order to bring the maximum sentence against a cop killer.

You need to take the Louisiana law as a model and apply it nationwide. The Blue Lives Matter Act has been introduced in Congress and would do just that. It would classify any targeted attack on a police officer as a hate crime.

Make law enforcement a protected class and give prosecutors the ability to punish those who deliberately target law enforcement to the fullest extent of the law!
