When a gunman opened fire on on our military men and women in Chattanooga, TN, one Sailor was able to return fire. Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White defied the military regulation and chose to carry his personal sidearm that day.

When White saw the gunman approaching the building, he opened fire.

How is this man being rewarded for his bravery? The military is punishing him for breaking the rules. Apparently, he was supposed to just lay down and die.

How is this man being rewarded for his bravery? With a medal? A commendation? No, the military is punishing him for breaking the rules. Apparently, he was supposed to just lay down and die.

There were other soldiers who created a diversion and led the gunman away from a crowd of people. They were heroes. But we didn't train them to run away when under attack. We trained them to fight back. But thanks to this regulation dating back to the George HW Bush/Bill Clinton administrations, the only legal way for soldiers to respond to an active shooter situation is to run away.

Marines don't run. Sailors don't run. Soldiers don't run. And it is unconscionable for you or anyone else to ask them to.

Right now, you and your colleagues are conferencing to resolve differences between both chambers' versions of the National Defense Authorization Act. It is absolutely imperative that you hold the line and ensure that the amendment to arm our soldiers passes.

But you have to hurry. Lt. Cmdr. Timothy White is a hero and unless you amend the law immediately, he will be punished for what he did.

Don't let the Obama administration and the military punish this brave officer! It is time to lift the ban on concealed carry on base before it is too late!
