What happened yesterday in Garland, Texas was completely avoidable. Congress had an opportunity to stop attacks like this and the Democrats blocked the legislation.

Senator Ted Cruz introduced the Expatriate Terrorist Act. This bill would close a loophole within our laws to stop known American terrorists from returning to the United States after fighting for ISIS/ISIL.

Sen. Cruz tried to fast-track the legislation to skip the lengthy committee process. This meant that it only took one Senator to rise in opposition in order to kill the bill. And that is just what happened…

There is nothing trivial about this. 8 U.S.C. 1481(a) is a law that is already on the books and it dictates that any American caught fighting or trying to fight for a hostile foreign army immediately loses his or her American citizenship.

That makes complete sense. But unfortunately, the law wasn’t designed to deal with the reality of the twenty-first century. Today, non-governmental terrorist organizations are just as dangerous as foreign armies.

And with groups like the Islamic State controlling vast amounts of territory, the law MUST be amended to stop American terrorist fighters from returning to kill Americans at home!

Democrats shot down Ted Cruz’s bill because it raised serious “constitutional questions.” Is that a joke?

This isn’t trivial… Any American who goes overseas to fight for a designated terrorist organization MUST be denied re-entry into the United States! Taking up arms against the United States warrants an immediate loss of citizenship!

The fact that even one Senator rose in opposition to this commonsense bill is mind-boggling… The fact that the legislation has not been reintroduced and fast-tracked is shameful.

If this loophole remains open, it is just a matter of time before a well-trained radical Islamist is able to wage an attack here on American soil. Yesterday's attack in Garland, Texas was waged by amateurs. The next time, we won't be so lucky. We have seen in the Charlie Hebdo attacks just what happens when these jihadists return home. When that happens, you better pray that you supported this legislation. I don’t want to think about what will happen to you if you don’t…
