The Patriot Act is up for renewal and the GOP wants to renew it as written!

The Fourth Amendment was designed for the express purpose of protecting us against this kind of probing. It doesn’t matter whether you have something to hide. The government has no right to collect your phone records, monitor your Internet activity, or investigate you without a warrant.

Yet, the GOP's Patriot Act renewal bill is a carbon-copy of the original.

In a few weeks, the Patriot Act will expire. This is the law written to respond to the 9/11 attacks and it was a huge mistake.

Both Presidents Bush and Obama used the law to gut the Fourth Amendment; my right to privacy. The Patriot Act ushered in more than a decade of warrantless wiretapping, the spying and monitoring of citizens’ Internet behaviors, and a complete watering-down of the concept of ‘probable cause.’

The Fourth Amendment was designed to protect me against just this type of overaggressive probing.

Now, with the law weeks away from sunsetting, many in the GOP are pushing for a carbon-copy renewal. At least that is the legislation that Mitch McConnell just introduced.

The whole reason that government agencies like the NSA are allowed to spy on Americans is because the Patriot Act allows them to!

This law doesn't stop terrorism.

In 1755, Benjamin Franklin penned a letter on behalf of the Pennsylvania Assembly to the colonial Governor. The letter included a famous quote that has been paraphrased hundreds of different ways:

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Despite being two and a half centuries old, this phrase perfectly captures the problem with the Patriot Act. We gave up our fundamental liberties in exchange for security, and now we are left with neither. We gave up our digital privacy in return for the illusion of security.

You MUST repeal the Patriot Act. It was nothing but a kneejerk reaction to a complex problem and it failed. If you allow the Patriot Act to be renewed, then I will vote you out of office. Period.
