Congressman Ryan Fitzpatrick (R-PA) just received an endorsement from the anti-gun group Everytown for Gun Safety (formerly known as Moms Demand Action on Gun Violence).
Fitzpatrick is one of the few Republicans to actually receive a gun control endorsement this year. But he certainly earned it.
Rep. Fitzpatrick voted against the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act because it didn't compromise with the gun control movement. In the past months, Fitzpatrick has introduced a number of gun control bills, including legislation to disarm millions of Americans by raising the firearm ownership age from 18 to 21 and a universal background check bill that would create a nationwide registry of gun owners.
But the bill that the Congressman is pushing now is far more dangerous. It is called the "red flag" bill.
Here's how it works. Red flag bills allow neighbors, friends, or even complete strangers to turn gun owners into police. Police officers are then allowed to disarm the "suspect" and drag him or her before a judge to prove that they deserve the right to keep and bear arms.
The American judicial system is built on a premise that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. We saw with the Kavanaugh hearings that the left doesn't believe in this principle anymore. Now, they're trying to enshrine this perversion into federal law.
If a disarmed gun owner cannot convince a judge that they deserve their gun rights back, then the judge would be able to extend the disarmament order for 6 or 12 months.
No criminal charges… no trial… just a judge ruling on hearsay to disarm innocent gun owners. A group of left-leaning Republicans have been demanding a vote for weeks and the GOP leadership has finally agreed!
It is deliberately difficult for gun owners to be disarmed in this country. That is by design. In order for something to be a right, it has to be hard for the government to revoke it.
In the United States, there are only a handful of ways that disarmament and 2nd Amendment revocation can be justified. If police fear a gun owner is dangerously mentally ill, then they can be adjudicated mentally defective or involuntarily admitted to a mental hospital. If officers worry that a gun owner is a criminal, they can be charged with a crime and disarmed pending the outcome of the trial. Felony convictions, dishonorable discharges, fleeing justice, and renouncing your citizenship can also justify disarmament.
The point is, someone actually has to do something wrong to lose their gun rights. Red flag bills would turn that completely upside down. The mere accusation that someone might be dangerous would be enough to disarm them. It is a gross perversion of our justice system.
I've told this story before. Years ago, my uncle was going through a particularly nasty divorce in New Jersey. His wife lied to police told them that he was threatening her. Within hours, a judge had signed off on a restraining order and police showed up to the house to confiscate the guns. During the divorce case, the judge used that order to justify giving the wife all of the guns in the settlement. She sold them all, including all of the family heirloom rifles and shotguns. To this day, my uncle still gets flagged when he goes to try to buy a gun, even though he did nothing wrong and was never even charged with a crime.
That is what liberals and "moderate" Republicans dream of when they push these red flag bills. They don't care whether it is abused or how many innocent gun owners lose their rights. They just want to "do something" on gun control before the midterm election.
Fitzpatrick is teaming up with other vulnerable Republicans to force a vote on this confiscation bill. Rep. John Katko (R-NY) has authored a similar bill and just signed on. He admits that his gun control flip is going to "make a lot of people mad," but he thinks that's the only way for him to hold onto his seat. Rep Francis Rooney (R-FL) has said that "some freedoms are going to have to be given up" in the debate over gun control. On the Senate side, Jeff Flake has teamed up with Dianne Feinstein to push forward a massive gun confiscation bill.
The left only needs 25 Republicans to flip in order for it to pass. They have the votes.
The pressure is mounting and the GOP leadership has finally promised to hold a vote on their gun control package.
This red flag proposal would open the door for widespread disarmament. We have already seen how these programs have been abused at the state level. Hundreds of people have been disarmed in Florida without even being charged with a crime.
If this bill passes, the concept of "innocent until proven guilty" is dead. If Congress moves to allow civilian disarmament without charges even needing to be filed.
Nobody wants dangerous people to have guns, but the law already gives police all of the tools they need to disarm dangerous individuals. What they don't have is a way to disarm YOU!
When the Founders ratified the language "shall not be infringed," they meant just that: the 2nd Amendment is a individual right that shall not be infringed upon. But they aren't around today to protect Bill of Rights from the attempts to gut it. Only you can do that.
It really is now or never. GOP cowards are demanding a vote to try to save their careers. If this plan goes through and a Federal disarmament program is created, there will be no coming back.
You must stop this surrender now before it's too late!
