Paul Ryan won a fight this week. Conservatives were demanding Contempt of Congress and impeachment votes against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for refusing to hand over subpoenaed documents.
These documents were on the Obama administration's efforts to surveil the Trump campaign and the decision behind launching the Trump-Russia witch hunt.
That vote was supposed to happen on Wednesday. Paul Ryan intervened and told Devin Nunes that he would have to give the Department of (in)Justice more time and wait until Friday.
Friday has now come and gone and the DOJ still has not handed over all of the subpoenaed documents.
Paul Ryan and the GOP establishment had their chance. It is time to purge the Deep State!
This is all coming on the heels of news that the Department of Justice may have actually altered the evidence that was given to the Inspector General. We already know that the DOJ withheld the 'smoking gun' text that showed FBI Agent Peter Strzok — the man who led both the Clinton and Trump investigations — promising his mistress that he would "stop" Trump from winning. But now, we're hearing that they may have also deliberately misled the DOJ Inspector General.
Congress has been waiting on these documents for over a year. We already know that the Rod Rosenstein is deliberately withholding damaging information from Congress. The Deep State is circling the wagons.
Devin Nunes gave Paul Ryan a few extra days and, surprising no one, the Department blew through another deadline. Rod Rosenstein is perfectly willing to let Robert Mueller bring the full weight of the government down on President Trump's allies. But when it comes to his own lawlessness, Rosenstein believes he is above the law.
This man has openly defied dozens of lawful Congressional subpoena. He has been given ample opportunity to comply. Every time he has blown through a deadline, the GOP leadership intervened to give him more time. But Rosenstein has ignored those deadlines too!
We see how Rosenstein is allowing Robert Mueller to expand his witch hunt to target Trump supporters for whatever crimes he can find, even if they have nothing to do with the 2016 election.
We've learned that Rosenstein has targeted Congressional staffers and threatened to investigate them if they didn't stop their government oversight work.
And we now see that Rosenstein is not only refusing to hand over subpoenaed documents, but he is also editing the documents that are handed over to remove incriminating evidence.
All of this is contemptible. All of this is impeachable!
The Contempt of Congress and Impeachment resolutions have already been written and edited.
Congress has the legal and constitutional authority to hold people in Contempt of Congress for defying lawful subpoenas. While they technically can instruct the House Sergeant at Arms to arrest the suspect, the realistic result is that the criminal charge is referred to the U.S. Attorney's Office in DC.
That is what happened when Eric Holder was held in contempt. Congress gave all the evidence to the US Attorney. But instead of prosecuting the case, he was told to stand down by his superior: Eric Holder.
Luckily, the Founders gave Congress another mechanism to hold government criminals accountable — impeachment. Yes, Congress can impeach cabinet members and other high ranking Senate-confirmed government officials. That includes Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Paul Ryan had his chance to stall and the DOJ still ignored his extended deadline. Now, it is time to take out this Deep State criminal!
