Holder Becomes First Attorney General To Be Held In Contempt Of Congress

Weird but historic vote proves that activism works in America

It was YOU who finally forced the hand of recalcitrant Republicans. They honestly had no choice as the Obama administration decided to follow a “they’re gonna cave” strategy to the bitter end.

In between a rock and a hard place, Republicans chose the hard place and on June 28, 2012 Eric Holder became the first sitting U.S. Attorney General to be held in contempt of Congress.

The vote was weird. The final tally was 255-67. There are 435 voting Members in the United States House of Representatives.

Unable to stop the historic vote from proceeding, Democrats staged a walk out while the roll was called. A grand gesture, to be sure. But its impact was something of a wet firecracker as 17 Democrats stayed to make certain their votes would be recorded in favor of finding Holder in contempt.

Why did those 17 people cross their own party to vote against their own Attorney General? Conservative Daily is willing to grant them some modicum of acting on principle, but only with the huge grain of salt that is grassroots activism. They would rather take the flak from outraged Party Bosses now than take the flak from outraged Constituents at the polls in November.

Still, it was both strange and historic.  Now, read this as it becomes even more interesting.

There were actually TWO votes. One was to find Holder in criminal contempt of Congress, and the other was to hold him in civil contempt.

The criminal vote is the only one that truly matters, of course, but the civil vote passed as well under a 258-95 margin.

And then came the backlash.

“It’s about racism,” screeched Frederica Wilson, a Democrat Representative from Florida.

“We’re here to say today that we believe that there’s something evil about using procedures of the House, particularly something as severe as holding someone in contempt of Congress, to serve political ends.” That from House Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn of South Carolina.

Holder himself was certainly not at a loss for words, nor is he ever. An intelligent and educated man, Holder used his podium at the League of United Latin American Citizens convention in Orlando to denounce the votes.

He called them “the regrettable culmination of what became a misguided and politically motivated investigation during an election year” and went on to say about House Republicans, “it’s clear that they were not interested in bringing an end to this dispute or even obtaining the information they say they wanted.”

Hmmm. One is forced to wonder what the Republicans would have done HAD HOLDER ACTUALLY GIVEN THEM ALL SUBPOENAED DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THE BOTCHED FAST AND FURIOUS OPERATION.

In a surreal example of circular logic, White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer called the contempt vote a “political sideshow” over a sting operation “everyone already acknowledges went wrong.”

In other words, since everyone knows we screwed up, we shouldn’t have to turn over diddly-squat!

And guess what? The votes, while ABSOLUTELY HISTORIC AND ONLY MADE POSSIBLE BY GRASSROOTS ACTIVISM, actually do NOT get us that much closer to obtaining the damning documents!

After all, Holder’s in contempt and in all likelihood a grand jury will be convened to consider criminal sanctions. The withheld documents, and the all-so-human reluctance of everyday citizens to send him to prison, are the only hole cards he has. He’ll bet the farm on the latter while holding back the former until it’s all that stands between him and prison bars.

And that could take years, certainly long enough for Obama to win a second term. In the end, it probably won’t matter. Eric Holder is TOAST, and you did that. What remains to be seen is what effect, if any, that this will have on the elections.

The Obama administration is betting that cries of “witch hunt” will be enough to smooth the rocks until after November.

He’s being helped, of course, by the mainstream media. They’re downplaying this as much as they can. They literally HAVE to report what happened, but they don’t have to make it their top story, even though such an historic act—the only sitting United States Attorney General to ever be held in criminal contempt of Congress—should be a no-brainer as lead.

Regardless, Conservative Daily is PROUD to send out a heartfelt thank you for all of the hard work you have done to this point. There’s simply no way the Republicans would have acted in due diligence had YOU not reminded them of the consequences of failing to do so.

THANK YOU!
