Fellow Conservative,
Democrats are introducing more gun control measures while Republicans are just twiddling their thumbs. It is time to change that…
Should Americans be allowed to carry handguns in public?
The answer is obviously, “yes.” Americans have a constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
But in a select number of liberal states, this right is still prohibited.
We all remember the story of Shaneen Allen, the African-American single mother from Pennsylvania who was arrested for bringing her legally owned pistol into neighboring New Jersey.
She didn’t know that her Pennsylvania concealed weapon permit wasn’t valid everywhere (like it should be).
Ultimately, Ms. Allen was shown mercy and the felony charges against her were dropped. But this is kind of thing happens far too often.
Enter Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) who plans to introduce a National Concealed Carry bill! Even better, he plans to add his bill as an amendment to a “must-pass” piece of legislation so it is guaranteed to make it to the President’s desk.
There are two ways to protect the Second Amendment right to bear arms. The first is to institute National CCW Reciprocity. This means that states would have to treat carry permits from outside states just like driver’s licenses.
The second way to accomplish this goal is by instituting what is known as “Constitutional Carry.” Under this type of system, which is currently used in Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Vermont, and Wyoming, any citizen who can legally own a handgun is allowed to carry one.
In a perfect world, Constitutional Carry would be the solution. I believe that one day, it will be implemented. But this is not the first step.
Every time we focus on right to carry issues, people email us back saying that they won’t support national reciprocity because they don’t agree that a permit should even be necessary. If you are one of these folks reading this now, know that I agree with you in principle.
But we need to be realistic and pragmatic. The reason that the Democrats have been so successful over the past years is that they don’t go for the long ball. They’re willing to fight for years to get what they way, chipping a little bit off at a time.
Step 1 has to be reciprocity. People shouldn’t have to risk prison time for protecting themselves while driving across country.
The great part about Rep. Stutzman’s bill is that it covers all of its bases. If you have a concealed carry permit — or if you come from a freedom-loving state that doesn’t require one to carry a weapon — you would be allowed to carry anywhere in the country without fear of losing your constitutional rights because you crossed a state line.
When reciprocity is the law of the land, liberal states like New York will follow suit and allow their citizens to carry concealed weapons as well. With other states’ residents allowed to carry, they will no longer be able to deny this right to their citizens.
The data proves that an armed society is a polite society.
The GOP holds majorities in both chambers of Congress. But they have yet to flex that muscle and fight for our 2nd Amendment rights.
Meanwhile, the Democrats are back to trying to infringe on YOUR rights! Just yesterday, they introduced the Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device Act (H.R. 752), an effort to outlaw and confiscate standard capacity ammunition magazines. They want to give police the right to go door to door to confiscate them.
Will this anti-gun bill pass? Probably not... But it shows that the Democrats aren’t giving up. We have seen what happens when Democrats take over Congress. Remember how they pushed Obamacare down our throats?
Can you imagine what would happen if Democrats retook Congress and were able to pass whatever anti-gun legislation they wanted?
We need to make sure that the GOP makes the most of its majority while it lasts. Now is not the time to rest on our laurels. We MUST force Congress to make gun rights a front and center issue!
The Second Amendment doesn’t end at the state-line and it is time that Congress protect Americans gun rights regardless of what state they live in!
Sincerely,
Joe Otto
