In June of 2012, the House of Representatives held Attorney General Eric Holder in Contempt of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with a Congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious.
This was a joint FBI/ATF operation designed to catch Mexican cartel members buying guns in the United States and smuggling them south across the border.
As stupid as this sounds, the plan was to allow the cartel members to purchase the semi-automatic rifles. Then, the FBI and ATF would theoretically intervene and catch the criminals before the weapons slipped across the border.
The only problem was that the Feds never bothered to intervene at all. They allowed these firearms to be smuggled across the border where they would eventually be used against countless innocent Mexicans and even a U.S. border patrol agent, Brian Terry.
To make matters even worse, many of these firearms have actually made their way back into the United States and into the hands of gang members. Not only have the guns killed countless innocent Mexicans, but now they are being turned against Americans caught in the crossfire of urban gang warfare.
The operation was a complete failure. At every step of the way, the Federal Government proved its incompetence and inability to perform even the simplest of tasks. And because this monumental blunder ended up costing countless lives, Congress pressed to get to the bottom of it.
Congress didn’t make Fast and Furious a scandal… President Obama turned this operation-gone-wrong into a scandal when he refused to comply with a lawful Congressional subpoena!
Congress ordered Eric Holder to testify and turn over relevant documents… he refused!
Congress ordered Barack Obama to force Holder to comply… and the President refused, citing his “executive privilege” to keep documents classified.
So, Congress voted to hold Eric Holder in Contempt and, surprise-surprise, Eric Holder refused to prosecute himself…
Now, two years later, the U.S. District Judge John D. Bates has ruled that it was unconstitutional and illegal for the Obama administration to withhold these records using executive privilege!
The Judge issued his ruling on July 18th. Today is August 1st and the DOJ has still refused to hand over the documents to Congress!
There really isn’t any room for interpretation here… A Federal Judge has ruled that what Eric Holder and Barack Obama did was ILLEGAL. It was illegal for the administration to exert executive privilege and classify the documents pertaining to Operation Fast & Furious.
And yet, the agency still refuses to hand over the documents!
When the United States was created, the Founding Fathers deliberately created a system of government with three co-equal branches of government. The legislature was charged with drafting the laws, the executive was in charge of enforcing the law, and the Judicial branch was responsible for smacking the other two branches down when they step out of line.
When the Obama administration handed guns over the Mexican drug cartels, Congress started an investigation into it to try to figure out what happened. The administration refused to comply and cited that it had the authority to legally stonewall the investigation.
And now, the Judicial Branch has spoken… but the Obama administration still hasn’t handed over the documents!
Montesquieu wrote, “when the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person, or in the same body of magistrates, there can be no liberty.”
I would posit this: as long as Eric Holder is the Attorney General of the United States, tyranny will remain the status quo!
Both Congress and a District Court Judge has demanded that the administration release all relevant Fast and Furious documents and every day that passes is another reminder that despotism has infected the executive branch…
Once again, the Constitution provides a means for removing despotic and tyrannical members of the executive branch. Just as Congress has the authority to confirm cabinet nominations, the legislature also has the authority to impeach them as well!
Congress represents YOUR interests. Join me in demanding that Congress remove Eric Holder from office!
One of Obama’s first campaign promises was to show how transparent his government would be. In fact, the Obama administration couldn’t be more opaque!
Defying and ignoring a court order is the last straw! As long as Eric Holder remains in a position of power, the Department of Injustice will continue to allow tyranny to prevail!
The whole DOJ needs to be cleaned out. Let’s start by handing out pink-slips at the top!
I won’t rest until Eric Holder is in prison,
