Dear Conservative,
Do you want to know what a foreign policy failure looks like?
The Iraqi army is building trenches around Baghdad to try to stop Islamists from taking the country's Capitol. American contractors have been surrounded and taken captive by these Islamist forces. The price of oil has skyrocketed. And while the Obama administration refused to give Iraq the aid it has begged for, Iran has stepped in to help defend its neighbor.
Do you know what Barack Obama did yesterday while Iraq was crumbling? He played golf in California.
No one is saying that we should invade Iraq and put more soldiers in harm's way. That just isn't doable.
Regardless of whether you think we should have gone into Iraq in the first place, this is a country where 4,489 U.S. soldiers lost their lives and another 32,000 were seriously injured while securing Democracy. They fought street by street to make sure that Iraqis had the right to pursue their own destinies.
We were in Iraq since 2003 and were able to achieve significant gains.
Everything that we accomplished in the 9 years that we were in Iraq has been undone in just one week because Barack Obama is too weak and stupid to respond to this crisis and to help Iraq fend off these Islamists!
I know that military intervention isn't popular, especially among conservatives. Truth be told, we wouldn't be in this situation if Barack Obama hadn't prematurely withdrawn from Iraq for purely political reasons!
Obama promised to get us out of Iraq, and he made sure that he did that... Even though it was premature and put the country at risk.
Obama never signed a status of forces agreement, meaning that the United States was not allowed to keep a small reactionary force in-country in case of a complete collapse, as we are starting to see now.
These Islamists aren't part of a well-trained military force. They are largely teenagers with rifles, riding across the country in pickup trucks. The Islamists' gains are not due to their military prowess, but rather due to the fact that we didn't stay in the country long enough to train the Iraqis to defend themselves!
Every use of our military needs to be calculated, there is no doubt about that. And in this instance, it is perfectly rational to think that we should just not get involved.
But if we do nothing and allow Baghdad to fall... If we allow an Islamist organization -- deemed too radical for Al-Qaeda -- to take over all of Iraq... What did our Soldiers die for? What did the tens of thousands of Americans sacrifice life and limb for?
The solution is simple: Obama is more than willing to use drone strikes in countries we AREN'T involved in -- Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, etc -- so, why does it take a whole week for President Barack Hussein Obama to decide whether he will defend our ally?
If I could go back in time and stop the U.S. from getting involved in Iraq, I would. I think most, if not all of us, would do that. But we don't have a time machine. We can't change history. The only thing that we can do is make sure that those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice didn't die for nothing!
Obama is off playing golf while Iraq is crumbling. We can stop these disorganized terrorists from taking over the country with just a few, well placed airstrikes.
But Obama is doing nothing. He is too weak to make a decision!
We must pressure Congress and ensure that the thousands of Americans who died in Iraq didn't die so that the country could become a radical Islamist state!
Sincerely,
Joe Otto
